How do you describe what you do for work?

I'm an email conversion strategist and copywriter, I write money-making, relationship-building emails for business owners and e-commerce brands. When I decided that I wanted to specialize in e-mail strategy and copy, I really had to think about whether I wanted to double down on the type of industry or type of person that I help, but I decided not to. I want to have the option to work with whoever I want. And as long as it's email, email strategy, funnels, that kind of thing, I really enjoy it. I think it's better to have more options, and then maybe pass a client on to someone else if it's not the right work, than to close off options.

What's your favourite thing about working freelance?

I love managing my own time and life and just being in charge of myself without having to report to anyone or tell anyone what I'm doing or have to join pointless meetings. And I love the freedom. I love being my own boss.

Where do you usually work from?

I work from a really lovely coworking space called Use Space in Manchester. Stunning. It's so green - it's actually got a greenhouse inside! The owner was a photographer, so he's a creative, and when you go inside you can see that it's been designed and created by a creator. It's got a live wall full of amazing plants and it's a really inspiring environment to be in, full of really nice people. Everyone's just really kind and it feels like a community. We have lunches together as a coworking space. Sometimes the owner's wife will cook the meal and then his daughters have a bakery, so they bake the dessert. It's just amazing. A really nice, warm, friendly feel.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

I drop my son off at nursery about 8am and then drive over to my coworking space, via Costa to get a hot chocolate! I sit down and read through some of my newsletters while I'm drinking my hot chocolate. I'm signed up to a billion newsletters and I have them all saved to go into a folder. So I go into that folder and I catch up with my newsletters and that's my little relaxation time. I probably do that for about 10-15 minutes and then I get to work. I specifically and very intentionally divide my day so I never have calls in the morning. Mornings are always focused on writing work or strategy because those are my best hours. By about 1pm, my brain starts to switch off, so I go and have lunch. When I come back, I'm either on calls or I might dip into a bit of one of my many courses. And then at about 5, I leave to go and pick up my son.

What one tip would you give other freelancers about running a freelance business?

Invest in yourself and invest in your business. I think we forget that when we make an investment, particularly in courses, communities, masterminds, and that kind of thing, we forget that the point is to then make more money on the other side of it. We only think about the money that we're spending and that we're gonna lose in investing this money in ourselves and our business. But the outcome will hopefully be that you make more money on the end of it, and I have 100% seen that. As long as you put in the work, and you engage and participate and do what you're supposed to be doing, the results and the outcomes are always completely game-changing.
