Sophie Carefull - Personal Branding Photographer
This Freelance Insights interview features personal branding photographer Sophie Carefull.
I discovered Sophie’s Instagram account because she’d worked with a couple of the freelancers I’ve interviewed for this series previously. Her grid is undeniably beautiful - full of gorgeous photos she’s taken of her clients - but I soon found that her posts and stories are full of wise words and encouragement.

How do you describe what you do for work?
I'm a personal branding photographer for creative leaders. I take joyful branding photos for coaches, therapists, designers, writers and other talented entrepreneurs to use on their websites and social media. I also offer one-to-one brand mentoring to newer creative business owners. I love doing both!
What's your favourite thing about working freelance?
Running my own business has opened me up to so many wonderful opportunities that I wouldn’t have experienced in a traditional 9-5. I’ve met fascinating, inspiring people, travelled to beautiful places, learnt tons of new skills and been able to be creative every single day since I started. I really love the freedom and variety of freelance life!
Where do you usually work from?
I work from home pretty much all the time that I’m not out shooting, which takes me all over the country and into Europe too. I will occasionally go to a cafe if I really need a change of scene while editing, but I’m more than happy staying in all day since photoshoot days tend to be very high-energy!
What does a normal working day look like for you?
Photoshoot days vary wildly but when I’m working from home, I set my alarm for 7am to give myself a couple of hours before I need to be at my desk, so I can have a good breakfast, meditate and get ready. I’ll usually reply to emails first then get to work on photo edits or mentoring calls, plus other admin throughout the day. I don’t usually make it past midday before I need lunch! I always eat in the kitchen to give myself a break from the screen. I usually wrap up by 5pm then go to a gym class three evenings a week.
What one tip would you give other freelancers about running a freelance business?
Take the pressure off yourself to get everything perfect first time - nobody does! And know that you don’t have to do it all on your own! Every successful business owner I’ve met has had some sort of support along the way, be that from a coach or mentor or by doing workshops and courses. Asking for help can be hard but it’s so worth it!
