Steve Folland - Video and Audio Producer

This Freelance Insights interview features video and audio producer Steve Folland.

I found out about Steve’s work when I joined the Being Freelance Community on Facebook over a year ago. It’s a wonderful group of freelancers who love to cheer each other on over a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits (my kind of people), and Steve is our beloved leader. He gives up so much of his time in service of other freelancers but somehow still manages to run a successful freelance business himself, producing video and audio for businesses.

Steve has an article and video all about 5 ways to win your first freelance clients - click the button further down this page to check that out.

How do you describe what you do for work?

I produce video and audio for businesses. Quite a lot of it is learning videos people actually want to watch and explainer videos. I also run Being Freelance, which takes up a lot of time too.

What's your favourite thing about working freelance?

I love the flexibility and variety of doing creative work around my kids. But also my fellow freelancers and figuring out the challenges is part of the fun.

Where do you usually work from?

I have a permanent desk in a cowork place, but I still like to mix it up with time working from home and cafes. I do seem to get good 4G if my laptop is near a piece of sponge cake. Must be a good conductor.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

Drop kids at school. Focused chunk of work. Emails & social media. Early lunch. More work until 2.45, then school run again. More bits and pieces later on. No day is normal though. Throw in sporadic podcast recording for Being Freelance and Doing It For The Kids, lots of stuff for the BF Community too and a lot of biscuits and you’re close.

What one tip would you give other freelancers about running a freelance business?

It’s not enough to just be great and do good work. You need to put yourself out there. Tell people about it, meet people, be known. You don’t have to ‘sell’, but make sure you're ‘visible’.
