Amber Badger - Content Writer & Coach

Amber Badger Content Writer Coach

This Freelance Insights interview features content writer and coach Amber Badger.

I came across Amber on Instagram a few months ago and was immediately struck by how authentically she came across. When you read her captions, you can tell that she’s truly being herself and it feels like she’s speaking directly to you - not something you find all that often on social media! As she explains in this interview, she’s found that being herself means she attracts clients who she’ll have an enjoyable working relationship with. Who could ask for more than that?

How do you describe what you do for work?

There are two sides to my work: I support businesses in their content writing, but I also teach business owners how to do their own content. I give coaching calls and help customers put together an editorial calendar or content strategy. My work’s quite varied, but it’s all about creative and personality-driven writing. I have a quirky style and find I attract a certain type of client, which is fab!

What's your favourite thing about working freelance?

I love the versatility of it. When I worked for companies in the past, I would always find myself getting bored after a year, or even six months. I’m the kind of person who’s constantly trying new things, and the beauty of freelancing is that it’s constantly changing; you’re always working with different types of clients. I also love the freedom of being able to decide when and where I work.

Where do you usually work from?

I rent a desk in a small marketing agency office, and I usually go there three days a week. Then I’ll spend the other day or two working from home just to get a bit of head space. There’s such a nice, creative vibe at the office, and I get all the benefits of having colleagues without having to answer to anyone! Renting a fixed desk there has been really helpful for separating work and home life.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

I always wake up so I can fit in something like yoga, reading or creative writing for an hour before I need to start work. That way, I’m not going straight into work mode, and it also helps me get into a creative frame of mind, which benefits my clients. I try to stick to a nine-to-five working day, and I always try to go for a walk during the day to get some fresh air and step away from my desk.

What one tip would you give other freelancers about running a freelance business?

Don’t underestimate how important it is to build your community. It’s been transformative for my business. We need to get away from the mindset of only bothering to build a relationship with someone if we think we’ll get work from them. For me, it’s been so beneficial to have that support network and to be able to share things with other freelancers who just get it.
