This Freelance Insights interview features creative consultant Chloe Ambrose.

I met Chloe through Holly Bray’s Busy to Boss Academy membership group. She then started working with me on her pricing and finances, and we got to know each other a little bit better. I love her philosophy when it comes to using creativity in your business, also because it’s one of the things that I really struggle with. Chloe is such a lovely person, and her passion for her work and clients truly shines through. It was a real pleasure to interview her for this series, which I’m now doing as Instagram Lives!

Going with the creative theme, Chloe is offering readers something we’ve never had before. When you sign up to her Strider’s Letterbox newsletter, she’ll give you the opportunity to email her and ask her anything about branding and creative marketing on one day each month. You can take advantage of Chloe’s generous offer by clicking the button further down this page.

How do you describe what you do for work?

There aren’t many creative consultants out there, which is one of the reasons I picked this title. In a nutshell, I come up with the creative ideas that will give my customers the marketing success they’re looking for as well as brand awareness and brand clarity. I call myself the “brand knit-picker” because I want to make sure there are no brand snags or holes in people’s brands that may be holding them back. That way people can move forward confidently with their businesses.

What's your favourite thing about working freelance?

My favourite thing is working with people who really value you and who are excited to work with you. To have people come on board who then feel so much clearer and enthusiastic about their brand after working with me is just such a wonderful feeling. I’m so grateful that I no longer have to work with people who belittle me or put me in a box. I also find the flexibility of freelancing really nice.

Where do you usually work from?

I’m working from home at the moment. I’m usually either at the kitchen table or in the office, but it’s a bit chilly in there because it backs onto the garage. After the pandemic, I’ll hopefully be in a nice coworking space or a coffee shop somewhere. When I’m working, I like listening to music and have it in my ears constantly, so I’m quite happy to work by myself.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

Each week looks so different, and I’d say that a different client tends to take priority each week. But more often than not, I wake up, check all my clients’ accounts and make sure that I’ve replied to everything I need to. Then I might be creating content, doing some brand exploration work or interviewing clients on their branding. I love that each week is so different because I get quite bored with routine.

What one tip would you give other freelancers about running a freelance business?

The biggest journey for me has been understanding my emotions. When you start out, you think the only struggles are going to involve finances, taxes and emails, but it’s an emotional rollercoaster. You’ll experience imposter syndrome and feel like an outsider at times. So be really curious about your emotions. It’s interesting to take a step back and ask yourself why you’re feeling a certain way.
