This Freelance Insights interview features translator, copywriter and SEO marketing specialist Delfina Morganti Hernández.

I met Delfina earlier this year when she booked a mentoring call with me. It soon became clear that we had a lot in common; we have similar values and like to work in a very similar way. Delfina also mentors other freelancers on marketing and works with a largely Spanish-speaking audience. I was so excited to interview her because we really wanted to collaborate and do something together.

Delfina offers a lot of free resources in Spanish to help translators with their marketing. She also has a podcast in English for people who want to learn more about transcreation, a YouTube channel with some episodes in English, and lots of tips over on LinkedIn. How do you describe what you do for work?

I help brands communicate their English and Spanish value propositions for the Latin American market in a way that resonates with their target audience. I offer transcreation, copywriting and SEO marketing localisation services. I also help personal brands, which might mean working with freelance translators to build their brands and reach their target audiences.

What's your favourite thing about working freelance?

I think it’s the idea of freedom. With great power comes great responsibility, and I see freedom as a power that helps us achieve our personal lifestyle goals. To me, freelancing is a way of life, and it brings with it a lot of responsibility towards ourselves and our clients. We need to make sure we’re looking after our health and well-being if we want to make our freelance business sustainable.

Where do you usually work from?

I’m based in Rosario in Argentina, and I usually work from home. But when I don’t have any calls or focused work, I’ll sometimes go to a bar or coworking space for a change of scenery. In January 2021, I started experimenting with life as a digital nomad. I travelled with my laptop, switching between days when I’d use it and days when I wouldn’t. Working this way is not the same as a holiday!

What does a normal working day look like for you?

I start my days by creating something that isn’t tied to a deadline or exercising for 15 minutes to an hour. I always try to do a yoga workout before I sit at my desk, but I also like dancing, cycling and running. I begin my working day at midday, and I’ll work for 4 to 8 hours with breaks depending on whether or not things go to plan! I usually do quality assurance tasks or spend time mentoring others.

What one tip would you give other freelancers about running a freelance business?

Be mindful of every decision you make. I mean this in terms of your finances, your marketing, the clients you take on, the projects you do or don’t accept, whether you work weekends, and whatever else you decide. Since we often go with the flow at the start of our freelance careers, many of us forget to be mindful. But by learning from others, we can grow and find different ways of doing things.
